Hybrid cars, sure. And electric too, of course. But Toyota also wants to be an emotional brand that focuses on sportiness and driving involvement. This is confirmed by the family of GR products of the Japanese manufacturer, which already includes Supra and GR Yaris. The new Toyota GR86 represents the third interpretation on the theme of the sports car and, perhaps, even the purest.
The recipe is the one already tested on the previous Toyota GR86, launched in 2012 and sold in over 200 thousand units worldwide: front engine four-cylinder boxer aspirated, rear-wheel drive with limited slip differential (helps to improve traction in corners), low center of gravity and low weight. Basically, everything you need to have fun behind the wheel. And it is to Toyota’s credit that it listened to its customers, the same ones who reproached the GT86 for having a somewhat sluggish engine at low and medium revs: the new engine unit, in fact, grew in displacement to 2.4 liters. The result is an increase in power of 35 hp and 45 Nm of torque, for 235 hp and 250 Nm total. A truly substantial increase.
The car shares the construction platform with the twin Subaru BRZ (which differs in the front portion and, probably, will not arrive in Italy): it is the same as the previous Toyota GT86 but further evolved and stiffened by 50%. This improves the performance of the setup and driving precision. In this regard are also useful calibration of the steering, made more direct, and the 18 “wheels, rubberized with 215/40 tires. The total mass is limited to 1,270 kg, thanks to the use of aluminum for the roof and fenders. The gearbox? A traditional 6-speed manual, as enthusiasts demand. But, as an option, there is an automatic with steering wheel controls.
Brilliant performance, as evidenced by the 0-100 km/h covered in 6.3 seconds, over a second less than the previous Toyota GR86. Inside, the new digital instrumentation and touchscreen infotainment system stand out. Long 4.26 meters (and just 1.31 high), the new Toyota coupe will be marketed in Europe during the year, at prices yet to be defined: by way of reference, the outgoing model had a list starting from 32 thousand euros.
